“Slam” By Nick Hornby

Slam is a new book by the English author, Nick Hornby, who also wrote “About a boy”, “A long way down”, “Fever Picth” and many other famous books. Slam is a realistic book for youths and adults.

Sam is 16 years old. He just seems to care about two things in life; skateboarding first, and than girls. One day, joining his mother in a party, he meets this hot girl at his age. They fell in love with each other at once. They started dating, and later on they started to have sex.

Both sex and love worked well, and it seemed like they were the perfect couple. But all good things come to an end, and their relationship failed. Sam decided to break up. Then the horrible news reached Sam. Alicia was pregnant.

Alicia choose to keep the baby, even though her parents didn’t wan’t her to. Sam is very nervous about being a father at such young age, and don’t wan’t to be a part of it. His mother was 16 when she got him, and she has warned him about having a baby as such young age is not a good thing.

Sam has to think about how to escape this madness he’s gotten himself into. Fillt with desperation he do many unexpected things.

The book is a really well written book, containing a touching story about two teenagers’ hard lives. The book is realistic and could have happened to every one of us. Nick Hornby succeeds in describing how a teenager thinks and acts, so you feel that one of them really could be you. What would you have done if you were about to be a father or a mother in an age of 16?

The posibillities are many, and this is just how two teenagers chose to solve it. Maybe you would have done it different, but you do feel it could be you, and you almost start to get feelings for the characters. You feel sad about Sam and Alicia’s problems.

The story is told by Sam himself, which is a good thing for this book and make it even more realistic. It’s a fictitious story with a lot of well placed humor and realism.

I can do nothing else but recommend you this book. Especially if you’re a teenager, or have been one. Because then you will understand so much more of it. Buy it, read it, enjoy it!
